What's tricky is knowing who will interpret these things one way or the other. A thumb is 'low effort' and so is interpreted as the textual equivalent of a monotone, barely spoken 'noted' by some, but by others it is (objectively) more effort than simply leaving a message on seen - it's an acknowledgement.
